
na tat-svābhāsaṃ dṛśyatvāt
Because it is an object of perception, the mind cannot illuminate itself
Throughout the Yoga Sutra all the practices are intended to remove obstacles that tend to promote individual awareness. Here, Patanjali offers further insight as to the true nature of things.
That which can perceive cannot perceive itself. For example, your eye cannot see or know itself.
Therefore, it is not your mind that generates its own light. Rather it is your Inner/True Self that provides the illumination; your mind borrows this light.
