Yoga Sutra 4.13

te vyakta-sūkṣmāḥ guṇa-ātmānaḥ

Gross or subtle, characteristics change due to the primordial tendencies (gunas) of nature.

The essential qualities of the subliminal tendencies explained in the previous sutra; conscious or unconscious, in their past, present and future forms, are latent/subtle and manifest only when observed in the field of perception.

When internal noise is stilled through meditation, it is possible to notice the underlying essence of what is perceived along with its characteristics.
