Yoga Sutra 4.11

Hetu-phala-āśraya-ālambanaiḥ saṃgṛhītatvāt-eṣām-abhāve tad- abhāvaḥ

Due to the fact that [past impressions] have a cause, a result, a residual stamp and a foundation, the elimination of those leads to the elimination of these

These past impressions are encased by four thick walls:

  1. Hetu-s: are causes.  They arise most from ignorance.

  2. Phala-s: are the results.  You may become attached to the same.

  3. Āśraya-s: are the residual presence.  Everything that ‘colours’ your mind,

  4. Ālambana-s: are the foundation.  The sum of everything that stimulates you like people, temptations, opportunities, environments, etc.

Together these four walls form a barrier of protection locking the past impressions in place.  Bringing awareness to the same can help remove the misidentification and its consequences which form old patterns of behaviour.  As is the strategy of Yoga.
