Yoga Sutra 3.44

Sthūla-svarūpa-sūkṣmā-anvaya-arthavattva-saṃyamāt-bhūtajayaḥ

There is mastery over the elements through saṃyamā on the form of objects: their gross aspect, their essence, subtle aspects, combinations and purpose.

In this sutra, the samyama practice is directed to the elements that make up everything in the universe. The five fundamental elements are: earth, water, fire, air and space or ether.  Each element has interrelated aspects:

  • Gross aspects are things that you can sense with your sense organs: colours, sounds, smells, shapes, etc.

  • The essence of something is the thing in question’s intrinsic form, unaltered by mental trickery or environmental conditions.

  • Their subtle aspects are often obscured, latent or difficult for the mind to grapple with, like the past lives or states of something.

This sutra states that practicing samyama on these elements and their different aspects of manifestation leads to mastery over all sensory phenomena.
