The underlying substance is retained in the past, present and future characteristics
Patañjali tells us we have an unchanging essence which is made of certain characteristics that remain the same with time. Put another way: every object is composed of an essential substance which does not change despite external modifications. Therefore, when you reflect on your own transformation, it is important to think that the essence in your 5-year-old self is still the same today and will remain the same when you are older.
