Yoga sutra 2.21
tad-artha eva dṛśyasya-ātmā
The essence of that which is perceived has one purpose: to help the “Seer”
In this sutra, Patanjali does nothing less than explain our purpose in the world! The point being that the body and mind have no purpose of their own, no personal agenda or function. They exist to set the soul free. The soul needs the mind; by itself, it does not have a way to manifest anything in the world.
