Yoga sutra 2.16
heyaṁ duḥkham-anāgatam
Suffering that has not yet occurred must be avoided
In this sutra, Patanjali suggests that the goal of yoga is not only to release your suffering, but to avoid creating further suffering in your life. Patanjali then tells us that there are ways to prevent further suffering from happening. He says that if you act before your kleśas (misperception, ego, attachment, avoidance and fear) kick in, then you can avoid future pain. Training is necessary, then, to prepare yourself to lessen the impact of unavoidable difficulties.
